I'M THUMBODY
A SELF ESTEEM PROGRAM OF THE MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION
"I'm Thumbody" promotes self esteem in children. Established by the Mental Health Association and adopted by the Broward County affiliate in 1983, Thumbody has enhanced the mental well being of over 100,000 local school children since its pilot year.
The concept behind the program is simple but clear. Everyone is unique. There is no one else in the world exactly like you. Everything you do makes you who you are. The size and make up of your family, your likes and dislikes, your interests and hobbies, and the things you do well and even your limitations are the things that distinguish you from other people and make you special. The "Thumbody" program helps children to see that while some people may look like you or have the same interests, no one is exactly like you in every way. For example, you have your very own fingerprints.
The I'm Thumbody program is presented to primary school aged children in their classrooms. Using video and interactive games, a volunteer facilitator shares the program's important message: like their fingerprints, each child is different and in that difference there is value.
The Mental Health Association offers a three hour training for program volunteers that includes all the materials necessary for presentation.
The program is ideal for volunteers who have limited time available. You may choose to do one hour long presentation or take responsibility for several school sites. The program readily accommodates each volunteers needs.
